Heritage Months at The Catholic University of America

The Office of Campus Activities provides and promotes intercultural programming throughout the academic year. These events and initiatives are designed to engage students in cultural exploration both on and off campus while reflecting the diversity of the Church. Consistent with the traditional value the Church has placed on the rich diversity of its family, Intercultural Programs at CUA invites the members of the CUA community to experience, expand, and explore their understanding of contemporary cultural influences on their daily lives.

Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15)

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Black History Month (February)

As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, like W. E. B. Du Bois before him, believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African American's contributions to civilization was realized when he and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925.

Women's History Month (March)

Women's History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as "Women's History Week." Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as "Women's History Week." In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as "Women's History Month."

Irish-American Heritage Month (March)

First celebrated in 1991, Irish American Heritage Month honors the contributions of Irish citizens to American life, and provides an opportunity to reflect on the diversity of Irish American culture.  March was designated as Irish American Heritage Month in order to coincide with St. Patricks Day.

Asian Pacific Heritage Month (May)

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islanders of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
